I was in my studio at Soka University pondering an image for my friend Arch
Asawa’s upcoming birthday. A blank piece of paper stared back at me, a universe
of white. My hand and a small amount of black Conté pencil transformed the
whiteness into a snow-covered Illinois landscape. Months later, confined to home
by the Covid pandemic, an idea took over my mind as I searched. A stock photo of
Kansas in winter suggested a landscape of haphazard yet organized geometry. That
image became the inspiration for the “Heartland/Winter” suite. Borrowing from a
concept used in many works by my decades long friend, Richard Artschwager, I
broke the vertical image into eight sections by folding and refolding the image.
These sections then became independent, yet not restricted, clauses in the
images’ interpretation. They became linked, yet free. Months later, still under
Covid restrictions, the suite was completed.
